Protect Your Car And Yourself

Step-by-Step Guide to Choosing a Security System for Your Vehicle

There are a couple of very important factors that need consideration before you choose a security system for your car.  Ask yourself these questions before you start shopping, and save yourself time, money and hassle.

  • How much money do you have to invest in your system?
  • How much money will you save on your insurance by installing a car security system?
  • What features does your car have that are (or not) compatible with the system you’re considering?
  • How do you use your car – is it like a second home (i.e. you’re living out of your trunk) or is it just the means by which you get where you need to go?
  • Do you live, work, drive or park in an area with a high car theft rate?
  • Are your expectations of a car security system in line with your car?  In other words, are you looking for a state-of-the-art security system for your Hyundai, or for a simple audio alarm for your Bugatti?  Is your car a restored classic or antique with special security requirements?

Once you’ve answered these questions, you can get down to your car security choices.  Car security systems run the price gamut from a few dollars to several hundred.  It’s important to note that no car security system is 100% foolproof in isolation, and it may be a combination of two or more that will provide you with the ultimate protection.

Audible Alarm Systems

The most basic of alarm systems are the audible systems.  Alarm systems emit a sound when a sensor is triggered, usually beginning as a relatively quiet chirp which, if not disabled, escalates to a ear-drum piercing blare.  That sensor trigger can be detected by any number of things — someone opening up the doors, hood or trunk of your car or shattering a window which will activate an air pressure sensor, turning the ignition switch or even tilting the car at an angle, as when it’s towed or pulled up onto a flatbed truck.  Audible security features are typically enabled once you leave the vehicle and a flashing LED will indicate that the system is operational.

One caveat with this type of system, many thieves know exactly which wire to cut to render the system inoperable, so while it’s fine to leave your LED flashing in full view, it would be wise to forego the “Protected By” sticker that you’re instructed to place on your windshield.  And don’t hide the systems “brain” in a spot anywhere as obvious as under the dashboard.

Immobilizer Security Systems

A step up from the audible systems is the immobilizers, which is a device that renders your car inoperable.  When an immobilizer system is in use, the vehicle’s operator must use either the car’s computer chip embedded key or know to turn off the immobilizer switch, which is hidden inside the car.

Vehicle Tracking Security Systems

Finally, a vehicle tracking system which is often considered a deterrent to car theft, since the car’s location can be traced at any given time using GPS and other technologies.  Unless you have extensive experience in doing so, it’s best to have a tracking system professionally installed.  This is not the time to be pinching your pennies, especially when a Bughatti is at stake.

After answering these questions, doing a little research and getting auto insurance quotes based on car security discounts from auto insurance companies, you’ll be ready to select a system that is right for you.
